Executive Summary First-Year Experience Initiative (original document is enclosed below as a PDF) The purpose of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) for Athens Technical College is to improve the first-year experience of students by providing a foundation for academic and career success. Members of the College community have worked for many months to develop a First-Semester Seminar (FSSE) course and Student Success Professional Development program to support and sustain the College’s mission and number one strategic goal of student success. Comprehensive research on how to improve student engagement, persistence, and program completion at Athens Technical College led to the QEP topic selection of the first-year experience. The FSSE course is designed to introduce new students to the academic skills they will need to attain their educational and career goals. The course will also introduce students to the resources available to them as they work toward those goals. Through the use of academic strategies and self-discovery, students will acquire knowledge and skills to help them succeed at Athens Technical College and in life. Students new to the college will take the FSSE course during their first semester of enrollment. The course will be a three-credit-hour hybrid course (a blend of…

Athens Technical College (ATC) has been involved in Open Educational Resources (OER) initiatives from their early foundations in online learning to moving towards a community of practice.  Examples of our OER efforts include professional development opportunities for faculty and staff,  building a repository of open content, and formation of an OER Committee with representation across campus.  In 2012, ATC received a Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant which in part provided funding and support for OER initiatives. This opportunity enabled the CTL team to scale OER integrations through administration-faculty partnerships, including establishment of an OER steering committee; and lead efforts to reduce costs for students attending the College. The CTL’s portfolio of initiatives include: Raising awareness and collaborating with faculty including formation of an OER Committee Learning more about OER and Open communities through networking and professional development (OpenEd Conference, Symposium on the Textbook, OSCON, among others)  and participating in MOOCs (OER MOOC from BC Campus) Serving as advocates across campus and regionally through curating and creating materials, presenting at conferences, and other opportunities  such as participating in OpenAccess Week 2014 Investing in technology to support OER Developing a learning object repository to store and share digital…
