Digitizing our Past – ATC Archives

GEAR logo

The Center for Teaching & Learning and the Athens Technical College Library have partnered up to digitize the ATC Archives! This unique collection of material documents Athens Technical College’s history from its beginnings in 1958 to the present.

The archives collection is housed in the Athens Technical Cbx1_951ollege Library and consists of print materials such as reports, working papers, and commercial publications about the college, slides, film, photographs, yearbooks, newspaper clippings, PR related materials, scrapbooks, and ephemera such as commemorative plates.

Much of the commercially printed material has been cataloged in the library catalog, SIRSI; however, the photographs (approximately, 1000), slides (approximately, 3000), film (VHS, Beta, etc.; approximately 100) and newspaper/media clippings, some loose and some scrapbooked (approximately 1000), have not been cataloged.

athenstechcourtPrint material in this collection spans the establishment of the College in 1956 until the early 1990s. Yearbooks being digitized include 1971-1973. Digital materials are being collected separately.

In late 2014, the Portal Manager (Robin Fay) and library staff partnered together to begin to address these unique materials and provide access to them online through a custom developed website (GEAR). The Portal Manager is responsible for website design and development, loading content, cataloging (describing content for indexing) and ensuring that scanned materials meet archival standards. The Library works to evaluate and process material, ensuring that all material is housed in an archival container. Additionally, they assist in creating description for newspaper clippings, and cataloging books and other commercial publications in the Library catalog.

Currently, photographs are being scanned and added to a repository (digital library); newspaper clippings are being described and added to the repository. You can’t see this collection yet, but it will be available soon!
